“Tourism Management and English” major was established and began to recruit students in 2003. In 2005, the major was changed to “Tourism Management”, which won the title of the Characteristic Specialty atTaishanMedicalUniversityin 2015. TMD offers three orientations: travel agency and tourism planning, recreation tourism and hotel management. Three levels of tourism management education are available: undergraduate education, junior college education and college to undergraduate education, and the full time students include 244 undergraduates, 146 junior college students and 97 premedical students. So far 842 undergraduates have graduated. The teaching staff with the proper ages and degree structures, are in close relation to their professional knowledge, including 7 full-time lecturers and 18 professional teachers, 88% of whom have master’s degree or above and 44% associate professor’s titles or above. The students of TMD are required to have a high demand of modern management theory, systematic tourism management professional ability as well as innovation awareness and enterprising spirit. TMD is devoted to cultivating application-oriented and compound senior tourism management talents with excellent practical ability and comprehensive quality. Students are prepared to be capable in the fields of business, management, planning, consulting and service in administrative departments of tourism at all levels of government and various types of tourism enterprises. Graduates can pursue their careers in tourism administration, tourism planning company, travel agency, tourism company, brand hotel at home and abroad, the resort, exhibition enterprise, exhibition center, planning company and related professional teaching institution.

Great emphasis in TMD’s education is laid on professional skills training and foreign language teaching, and some courses are given by foreign professors. In the last 5 years, teachers of TMD have undertaken more than 30 scientific research projects, most of the achievements of which are applied to serving Taian tourism development. Among those scientific research projects, one at the provincial level, 23 at municipal and industrial levels and 6 at school level. One project was awarded the second prize for Excellent Achievements of Shandong Soft Science, four projects were awarded the Excellent Achievements of Taian Philosophy and Social Science. In addition, 32 papers were published. Several teachers were sent to get further study in theIowaStateUniversity, Fu Jen Catholic University,ChineseAcademyof Social Sciences andUniversityofInternational Businessand Economics. A number of students were selected to study as exchange students in some well-known universities inSouth KoreaandTaiwan.

Students of TMD have actively participated in national, provincial and municipal competitions, winning about 50 rewards. More than 300 students have obtained the National Tourist Guide Certificate. TMD has well-equipped teaching training rooms: three language labs, one catering training room and one hotel room service lab. There is also one foreign language teaching radio station and one radio channel.
