


1. About Russian Department
History:Established in September 2004, the Russian Department of Taishan Medical University is responsible for Russian undergraduates’ courses, as well as College Russian teaching. After years of teaching research and practice, Russian Department has developed into a very mature unit with stable and well-structured faculty members and high social recognition. It employs the Sino-Russian joint education as a main training mode and the teaching quality is guaranteed.
Mission:Students in Russian Department are required to have international vision and humanistic literacy, master Russian language skills, literature, knowledge about national conditions and culture, and have the ability of language application, cross-cultural communication, critical thinking and innovation. The Department also lays emphasis on medical Russian. After graduation, students have many options, including teachers, translators, interpreters, managers in such fields as education, culture, foreign medicine, foreign affairs, foreign trade, science and technology.
Requirements:The students should have good political quality, adhere to the leadership of the Communist Party of China, support Marxism-Leninism, Mao Zedong Thought and Deng Xiaoping Theory; be equipped with correct outlook on world, life and values, excellent morality, patriotism and international horizon, social responsibility, humanity and scientific literacy; develop the sense of innovation, professionalism and cooperation; master Russian language skills, Russian literature and national conditions; be familiar with Chinese language and culture; have some relevant professional knowledge such as foreign trade and medical Russian so as to acquire the interdisciplinary knowledge; have a strong ability of using Russian language, including translating medical-related terms and texts, and the ability of organizing, managing and coordinating.
Features:The overall development of Russian Department is to rely on curriculum system, reinforce the students’ language foundation, pay attention to the improvement of humanistic accomplishment, highlight the application orientations, promote the comprehensive and coordinated development of talents. The main features are reflected in the following aspects.Firstly, reinforcing the language foundation.Language curriculum remains to be foundation, currently accounting for one-third of the prescribed credit hours (33.2%);Second, highlighting the medical characteristics.Until now, we are the only medical university in China to set up Russian Department. The Department relies on the medical advantages and highlights the characteristics of medical Russian to provide talents for Chinese and Russian medical exchanges;Third, highlighting the characteristics of Russian.In addition to having a strong Russian language ability, it is still necessary for students to master rich Russian cultural background. The ultimate requirement for the cultivation of foreign language talents is to achieve cross-cultural communication, which is composed of Russian history, geography, politics, economy and diplomacy , and such broad cultural knowledge also enables students to have great potential for future development, for the employers are more likely to recruit talents who are not only proficient in language expertise, but also have a wide range of professional peripheral knowledge, and creative ability to complete the task of various types;Fourth, attaching importance to application.Based on improving students’ language skills, much attention is also paid to the improvement and expansion of other abilities to serve better for the field of foreign trade.
2. Teaching Conditions
At present, there are 12 labs in our school, among which are 2 analog language labs, 10 digital language labs, 1 simultaneous interpretation lab and 1 translation lab. In addition to the above hardware, the Russian Major Department also has purchased ITEST Russian test system and Foreign Language Virtual Simulation Situational Teaching System. The application of these advanced equipment and systems has promoted the teaching quality of Russian Major to the domestic first-class level, and greatly satisfied the Russian majors’ needs in listening, speaking, reading, writing, translation skills training.
With regard to the books and reference materials, in the Reference Room of Foreign Language College there are more than 3,400 foreign language books, 43 kinds of journals for foreign language teaching and academic research, which provide great convenience for teachers’ teaching and research and students’ learning.
Faculty
All the professional teachers in Russian Major Department are from different institutions of higher learning both at home and abroad. Therefore, the alienated academic relations bring different academic styles, academic traditions and academic backgrounds to the professional development of Russian Major, favor the maintaining of good academic relations with other fraternal institutions, and make the professional structure of the discipline more reasonable.
Faculty Status
In Russian Department, there are 8 full-time professional teachers, and several perennially employed Russian foreign teachers. Among the full-time teachers, there are 3 teachers with senior titles, 5 lecturers; 4 teachers with doctoral degree (1 postdoctoral, 1 post-doctoral fellow) and 4 masters. Besides, 6 of the teachers have foreign learning and visiting experiences.
Research Situation
In the past five years, the teachers in Russian Major Department have undertaken and participated in 2 national projects, 3 projects of the Ministry of Education, participated in 1 major project of the Ministry of Education, and presided over 10 projects of the department level. Additionally, they have won 6 teaching achievement and research awards of the provincial and ministerial level, published more than 40 scientific research papers and teaching research papers (3 papers in CSSCI journals and nearly 20 papers in core journals). Finally, they have participated in the translation of 2 books and published 1 textbook.
International Cooperation in Education Programs
In order to play a supporting role in meeting the demand of foreign language talents required by the national strategy "One Belt And One Road" and respond to the international development strategy of the university, Foreign Language College has vigorously expanded the international cooperation with Russia. Based on the previous cooperation with Russian universities and colleges, in 2014 we reached the cooperation intention with the Moscow State University in Russia, and opened a new chapter in the internationally cooperative education programs with Russia.
Mode of International Cooperation in Education Programs
According to the agreement between Chinese and Russian universities, the cooperation between Russian Major Department and Russian universities is carried out in three modes: “3 + 1”, “2 + 2” and “4 + 2”. The so-called “3 + 1” mode means that the undergraduates of Russian major in Taishan Medical University study at home for 3 years and study in Russian university for 1 year. The so-called “2 + 2” mode means that the undergraduates study at home for 2 years, then go to the Russian university to study for 2 years, and graduate with 2 diplomas issued by Taishan Medical University and Russian university respectively. The so-called “4 + 2” mode is that the outstanding graduates of Russian major in Taishan Medical University can study for a master degree in the Russian university directly.
At present, the Russian department is leading the way in international cooperative education among its peers in Shandong province, highlighted by the “2+2”mode of personnel training. From 2014 to 2017, the department has sent altogether 47 students to Russia for further study.
In addition to study-abroad program of TSMU, students are also encouraged to participate in the study-abroad program of CSC each year, including the transfer undergraduate program and master’s degree program at public expense.
The Effectiveness of International Cooperative Education Program:
It has been proved that international cooperation is an effective way of foreign language education in the new era. Since the implementation of international cooperation, the Russian Department has entered a period of rapid development. It is worth mentioning that in 2011 and 2015, students’ passing rate in the Test for Russian Majors reached to 100%, being in the forefront of all the Chinese universities; The first volunteer registration rate reached to 106.8%, ranking the first in Shandong province; The department has held the national symposium named “the second national Russian specialty construction symposium: Inheritance and innovation”; Students have made remarkable achievements in various competitions, winning the third prize in the national Russian contest in 2015, 2 first prizes and 4 second prizes in the first Russian contest of Shandong colleges and universities in 2016 with a qualification for the semi-finals of the national Russian contest; The story of our students’ active participation in the career of culture promotion in Moscow was reported by the Russian local TV station, which could be seen as a role model of the publicity of Chinese culture with the main body of universities.
As a pioneer of the Sino-Russia cooperation in school-running, the Russian department aims to push the international cooperation in school-running to the depth and to realize the leap-forward development of the quality and level of talent training.

6. Students’ levels and qualities
According to social statistics, the employment rate of Russian majors of our department is top-ranked in TSMU, with the employment rate in the past five years reaching to more than 98%. With regard to teaching, the department has seen a satisfactory result in students’ passing rate of the Test for Russian Majors in the past five years. Graduates from the Russian department have firm professional knowledge, good potential for future development and extensive adaptability to the society, and are welcomed and praised by their employers.
