English Department

The English Department at the School of Foreign Languages, Taishan Medical University, whose predecessor was the English Language Teaching & Research Section, was established in the year 2001. It began to recruit three-year program college students of English language in 2001, undergraduates of English language in 2002 .

Over the years, the English Department has been adhering to the School’s concept of “taking the English Department as the leading role, the Russian and Tourism Management Departments as the wings”. By basing on realities, keeping up with the times, forging ahead with a pioneering and innovative spirit, constantly improving the existing teaching theory and enhancing teaching quality, the Department has developed into a major with a certain scale, a sound structure and a complete teaching faculty, whose teaching quality can be guaranteed.

Thus, the Department takes the aim of cultivating such talents with solid English language foundation, proficient English language skills, extensive knowledge, strong abilities in innovation and practice, as well as certain cross-disciplinary knowledge, good ideological and moral consciousness, high scientific and cultural levels, strong physical and psychological qualities and strong abilities in English-Chines language application and scientific research, hoping to provide English graduates with skills for a variety of positions in the field of foreign affairs, economics and trade, education, culture, medical services, scientific research, tourism or other fields related to English teaching, research, translation, management and so on.

The students are expected to have proficient English listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating skills, extensive knowledge in English linguistics and English-American literature as well as a broad range of relevant knowledge in the geography, history, politics, economy, cultural customs of major English-speaking countries. Besides, they are also required to be familiar with Chinese culture and have good mastery of Chinese language skills. In the meantime, they should have certain second foreign language knowledge and grasp corresponding basic skills in listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating.

There are 22 teachers in the English Department, including 2 professors, 8 associate professors, 8 lecturers and 4 teaching assistants. All of them have master's degrees or above, and 2 are doctors. For years, the Department has been inviting and employing 4-6 foreign teachers throughout the year. The research interests of the whole faculty cover such areas as literature, linguistics, translation and culture. And the Department is responsible for the teaching of all the courses and the guiding work of the graduation thesis of three-year-program college English majors, four-year-program English undergraduates and second-Bachelor's-degree English majors.

Main courses include: Basic English, Advanced English, English Listening, Oral English, English Reading, English Writing, British/American Society & Culture, English Linguistics, English Literature, American Literature, Translation Theory & Practice, etc.

The English Department has 7 language labs, 1 simultaneous interpretation laboratory, 3 radio stations for foreign language teaching purposes and 3 transmitting channels, whose launching range can cover both the main campus and the Tianwaicun campus, meeting the teaching needs of the whole department.

The English Department has always focused on teaching and research. And the past few years saw the the completion of a number of research projects including 1 project supported by the Ministry of Education, 1 social science planning project supported by Shandong province and over 10 projects supported by Shandong Education Department. In addition, many papers have been published by our staff teachers, several of whom have won awards in Shandong Young Teachers Teaching Contest.

The English Department attaches great importance to the shaping of students’ rigorous study style and deems it its duty to improve its teaching quality and cultivate students excellent in both personal character and academic performance. Since its establishment, the students have achieved gratifying results in TEM4 and TEM8. Moreover, a considerable number of students have been admitted to pursue graduate study in such noted universities as Peking University, Beijing Foreign Studies University, Shanggai International Studies University, Nankai University, Nanjing University and Xiamen University. There are also many students enrolled to study in celebrated oversea institutions in countries like the USA, UK and Canada.
